Barn Door / June 1, 2018 / Valentine Carriere
There are several popular applications for barn door hardware. One example is for separating one room from another where before there was just an open doorway. For example an open passageway between a den and a hallway. Here barn door hardware can be used in a 2-door sliding system where the doors can slide into the open position unobtrusively or slide into the closed position to partition that room. Another use of the hardware has a smaller end application. It can be used for a unique and rustic window covering or for an entertainment center covering.
As homeowners and designers alike are looking for new ways to improve the aesthetics of their homes one way in which they are doing it is by having custom doors carefully crafted for entryways to libraries studies living rooms dining rooms and even bedrooms. This is why more and more people are choosing specialty made doors instead of the standard Home Depot variety. However if the door is on hinges or slides into the wall then who is going to notice it? What is the use in having a beautiful door if it merely slides out of sight and out of mind when in the open position. With barn door hardware you can make that custom door that you spent your money on a part of the rooms decor. When slid into the open position the door hangs on the outside of the wall almost as though it were meant to be a piece of art in the room. When in the closed position it is the classy enclosure you intended it to be.
Most strap hinges are around 20" in length providing plenty of support for heavier barn doors. Pinnel hinges are one of the most cost effective strap hinges on the market. There are two main components of a pinnel hinge the strap portion that attached to the door frame and the pinnel portion that attaches to the jamb of the frame. The end of the pinnel has a pin on it that attaches to the strap portion on the door. This allows you to attach the components on the respective structures and then assemble the door to the frame. The strap portion of the pinnel hinge usually uses lag screws or bolts for assembly.
