Modern Sliding Door Hardware This type has metal brackets with a wooden roller with a maximum holding weight capacity of 200 pounds. When building a new barn there are many types of hinges and hardware to choose from for your barn doors. We will explore some of the choices and types of hinges as well as the accessories to construct a safe effective and proper barn door. Strap Hinges Strap hinges are one of the most basic and versatile hinges for a barn door. The come in various lengths and styles. No matter how good a hinge looks its very important to make sure you have the correct duty rating. If your door weighs 200 pounds you must have hinges rated for that weight. If a single hinge is rated for say 100 pounds than three hinges would more than suffice for your 200 pound door.
Its sometimes referred to as "flat track hardware" because the track itself is made of solid steel flat bar. This gave the track strength and rigidity. Now instead of a vertical hinge system large doors had a horizontal track system that supported them. The horizontal design allowed for the weight of the door to be spread out more evenly across the entire system giving it more strength. It also allowed for the large doors to slide back and forth into position instead of having to swing out. More strength more space more overall ease of operation- that was why this style of hardware was developed and used. And that is where the name "barn door hardware" comes from.
