Recently I was asked to bake THE birthday cake for a celebration of four crumbsnatchers that were turning 1yr old. I was quite nervous, as I’m no more a professional cake decorator, than I am a rocket scientist. But I came up with a few clever ideas on my own that were quickly tossed out the door. The dolls were inappropriate and the sparkling candles were a hazard. But not to worry, I settled on a cake that was topped with the biggest mound of cotton candy you’ve ever seen. Will I be baking that 6-layer cake again? Not if my life depended on it!! Here’s the recipe, as I’d soo prefer you to make this on your own than to request me to whip this up for your next gig. Dealio?
6 layers of big thanks to Phil (Defalco Photography) for snapping all my suga shenanigans…

very nice….even with the four girls with their derriers in the cake hehe
Thanks so much TG! That was my favorite pic of them all!!!
Sounds delicious! So I guess a birthday cake order is outta the question! LOL!
Summer, I had originally planned to take that cake somewhere to be photographed and Phil smartly suggested he photograph it at my place. Thank GOD I listened to him and he got some good shots in, as it totally collapsed when I moved it back into the kitchen!! I’m just to clumsy to be make’n anything too fancy. xoxo
Jenny, this is an instant classic! Personally, I like the one with the naked dolls; a li’l reminiscent of a doll cake I had as a kid, but of course my doll had her boobies frosted! The rainbow cake is fabulous and the cotton candy topping is inspired. Keep up the amazing work!!
Great idea for such a bright, fun cake. And as always, gorgeous pics. I love it.
Jenny, I don’t know how you manage to do it, but you’ve outdone yourself again . This cake would work equally well for a toddler’s birthday as for a gay pride party or even a gathering of naturalist-dolls (or the clothing-adverse people who collect said dolls). Maybe not for a diabetic’s celebration….Thanks, Dan
Beth..Thank you soo much. I think I had the same doll cake as a kid! Never, ever out of style!!… Cindy… Thank you sooo much, I appreciate you. Dan… you always make my day with soo many thoughtful kind things. When are you hiring me?
xoxoxo everyone…
I have never seen anything like it in my life. Amazing!!! If anyone can pull off a cake like this, Vintage Sugarcube can!!!
Suze… Thank you a million! You are amazing, 2 kids, moving and still have time to be supportive and leave comments. Thank you times a million.
good gawd girl, you are my hero. i’ve been wanting to make a rainbow cake for a whole year now, but i am just never organized enough with my time.
you amaze!!!!!
Love the colors! Do you have a tasty recipe for frosting? I like vanilla ones that don’t taste fakey. I’ll stay tuned….
Brilliant! You are definitely baking my wedding cake in 2030!
What an impressive rainbow cake — especially considering you’ve never tried this before. The layers turned out beautifully.
Ok, Jen, I think this is the best one yet! Love the dolls, perfectly appropriate, had to send this one out to all the bois… it is a rainbow afterall! Love ya!
Thank you sooo much everyone for your kind words! I was a little worried about this post!! xoxo
Oh la la, captivated by the layers of the rainbow…..love the pics. The last one needs sunglasses to look like a pink wigged lady….or a moustache…haha
Awesome, lucky birthday kids! My birthday is coming up………..I’ll even let you use sparklers!
PS. Let’s get that San Diego Blogger’s group together!
@Claudia, I love the rainbow the best, and I should have thought about dressing up the pink cotton candy!! @Tiffany, YES!! I will email you, that would be sooo awesome. xoxoxo

I never got a Pride birthday cake like that as a kid. With naked Barbies, to boot! yeah, Baby!
A-freakin’ AMAZING girl! Loved your ‘toppings’. Your creative and fun-loving spirit shine through in all your pix and they always make me smile!! Keep it up, kid.
Loved the colorful layer idea. Am definitely using it for the next B-day!
Skeezix and CADL, Thanks so much for the kind words!!
I love that the cotton candy looks a whole lot like a wig that I have seen before…
Too bad the cake is less than sturdy, it would be amazing to see you walking the parade route offering up slices of pride.
Thank you so much Lex. I love that idea of ‘slices of pride’!! You are brilliant, hence one of the many reasons I love you.
Jenny,
The layer cake caught my eye then I saw the dolls!! Fabulous!!! Hope all is well the website is great!! I am telling my frineds to go to it and look at the recipes and make a comment!!
One blonde, two brunettes, a foxy red-head, and delicious frosting all in one place. How lucky can a guy get? Let’s just say I got to shoot some cake, and it it too. It tasted amazingly good…like the bday cake I always wanted as a kid, but never had until Jenny made it. Now my daughter wants Jenny’s cupcakes for her bday. Lucky Kid.
Philip and Lynn! Thank you both sooo much!!
This is STELLAR!!!!!!!!!! Really will you bake this again? The toppings are HILARIOUS. Mile high cotton candy? Perfect.
Oh wow, I totally want to make a cake like that now! It looks SO amazing!
That is so cool! How did you do that
You’ll make this cake one more time on December 7th, right? I love it!
Oh mamma mia, this is exactly the cake I dreamt of as a child! No, actually, this is the also the cake of my dreams as a grown-up… I love the colors and the pink cotton candy piled up on top like a pinkwashed hairdo gone right. I’m only disappointed that you won’t be baking this again for my next birthday :’-(
Love it! So much color and those layers look perfect!
This is basically the coolest cake ever! Great idea and awesome job.
This cake is gorgeous! Maybe in a little over a year when my little girl turns one, you’ll change your mind and just have to try it again…..
FUN!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you again! I was worried you all would think this post was on the boring side, thank you for giving me the gusto to keep jamm’n! xoxo
Hey Tiff! The truth is, I know I’ll wanna try it again! xoxo
Wow, if you had had 1 more doll they could have been “The Go Go’s”.
Big cake, big hair…so 80′s
Great job, JJ
This is probably the coolest birthday cake I’ve ever seen! My inner child is freaking out and begging me to have this for my birthday cake next year.
MAKE IT!! It’s not as bad as I made it out to be, and it will make your bday xtra special. xoxo
Well that is one great cake. First, I love the inside. Beautiful. Second, when I saw those naked ladies I thought it was a bride giving it to the groom for a “safe” bachelor party…save the live model leaping from the cake.
High Design!
Cotton candy on a cake!? genius. Wow. I can’t get over this right.. its like sugar overload but in a totally legit way.. yuuuum!
I’m getting a sugar hight just looking at these beautiful photos!
Beautiful cake! so colorful and fun!
Hey Girl- This is hysterical! Loved the dolls, especially the redhead with the glasses. Hmm, she looks so familiar…..Seriously, the cake is gorgeous!
I’m serious you are brilliant! I really do want this cake like now!!!!
I absolutely love this cake! Am definitely gonna try (operative word) to make this one day soon! Once again, I’m impressed with your work & enjoy viewing your site! See you soon!
Wow! The cake looks beautiful. Genius!
Ijust adore this cake ..colourful l=the way I like
Thank you sooo much everyone!! Try out the recipe and come up with some wacky colors of your own.. xoxo
Remember- groovy NEON colors by McCormick and I found them in my local grocery store. Not expensive at all.
Jennifer, I think you are shortchanging yourself. Each cake is a layer and so is each frosting, so you really made a 12 layer cake, which is just mind-blowing, like the neon colors. Keep up the great work.
WOW! I love it! My children will think I am the bestest mommy on the whole frickin planet if I can recreate this cake. Yeaaaa! I am gonna to save this recipe as my secret weapon for when I need to get on their good sides. VSC saves the day again!
OMG! You’ve done it again. I love all of them!!!
Great rainbow of color and oh such fun.
I love the rainbow of colors!!! Definitely will be a hit with the kiddos!
Muy Fantastico!
Awesome cake. Reminds me of that Katy Perry video (CA Gurls)!
This is by far one of the happiest things I have seen lately. Not sure if it’s the dolls or the colors or the cotton candy! XOXO!!!
wow……now that cake is incredible!!!! a sight to behold, all those different colored layers…..just amazing….and then you turned it into a Katy Perry Cake with all those nekkid dolls….I did love the rear view!
I think you should recreate a life size version of it!
You certainly are creative with the decorating!!! Looks like it tastes good too, which I suppose is the point
Laughed out loud – and still willing and able and want – to take a bite.
Yum! The cotton candy is a stroke of genius.
This is an amazing and beautiful baking inspiration. It’s the cake version of this: http://rainbowsightings.com/

http://zebraandmeerkat.blogspot.com/
IVY!! Thank you so much for checking out VintageSugarcube! I think you need that 6 layer cake for your next birthday! I’m lovin’ on the Zebra and Meerkat blog!! FAB-U-LOUS darling.
Bisou Bisou!!
Very cool stuff. I’ll bet the colored layers were a hit!
RAD!
very interesting info ! .
Yeah, I’m the sucker that tried this anyway. The play-by-play is on my blog with a G-rated version of the cake. It was going to the Christian preschool afterall… LOL – But it was FABULOUS! (http://mommyupgrade.com/?p=534)
Trista- Girl….You are such the bomb diggity!! I am honored you tried my cake. You’ll have to think of an occasion to make a cake with those cute dolls.
Eliot- Thank you times 6. Ha Ha.. I really am happy you tried my recipe and thank you for your kind, kind words. You da bomb!!
That’s quite the layer cake! I can see why the dolls weren’t appropriate for the kiddies. Of course, with the dolls and the rainbow theme, it’d be ideal for gay, lesbian, and bi pride week.
Thanks James. I’ve made that cake only twice, and next time, I’m letting someone else make it.
